The Hawaii Society for Respiratory Care recognizes the significant contributions of its members and partners with the following awards:
Helen Ono Award
Helen M. Ono, RRT
The award honors the memory of Helen M. Ono, RRT who passed away in October 2000. Throughout her respiratory care career which spanned nearly 30 years, she served the HSRC (as its president at least twice, delegate to the AARC, director, secretary, treasurer, and chairperson and volunteer on numerous committees). While chairperson of the Annual State RC Conference Committe for many years, she helped to build its stature among RC state conferences nationwide. Besides giving time to the HSRC, she was a dedicated supporter and long-time volunteer of the American Lung Association of Hawaii (“Emphysema Hui” and “Kokua Na Keiki” Family Asthma Program); the Young Buddhist Association of Honolulu’s “Hawaii Asthma Camp”; community outreach programs sponsored by her workplace, Kuakini Medical Center; and her church, St Patrick’s in Palolo. She was an advocate for the licensing of respiratory therapists and was very involved in the HSRC’s first legislative attempt to bring it to pass in 1985.
Each year since 2000, Hawaii respiratory therapists are invited to nominate a peer who exemplifies the qualities of leadership and the spirit of giving that Helen exemplified; and has contributed to the growth and development of the HSRC and the Respiratory Care profession in Hawaii. For the HSRC, this is a very special award that honors a very special respiratory therapist who began her career as one of Oahu’s first and few inhalation therapists.
Criteria: Nominee “shall be a Respiratory Therapist and a current AARC member.”
Nominee “shall be an individual who has worked for the advancement of the Respiratory Care profession through excellence of care, compassion and advocacy on behalf of the respiratory patient; for the promotion of respiratory health through community service, public awareness and the mentoring of health professionals; for the advancement of the art and science of Respiratory Care and the enrichment of the Respiratory Care community.”
